Our Principles for Community Engagement

We acknowledge that effectively incorporating the views of the community in our decision making will not be easy. The following principles will guide our approach.

We recognise:

  • the community's right to engage in key decisions to be made that affect them and their environment
  • that our decisions can be enhanced by the diverse perspectives, expertise and views of external stakeholders
  • that effective community engagement depends on mutual trust, respect, and effective communication between the community and our staff
  • that the community includes
    • anyone affected by the project
    • residents and customers
    • business operators and commercial customers
    • professionals and consultants
    • Council officers and staff
  • that the process of community engagement must be transparent, flexible and responsive to the needs of the community
  • that the purpose of community engagement is not just to win support for, or defend, a decision already made
  • that we are responsible for ensuring the community's input, where obtained, is carefully considered and informs our decisions.
